Fatal crash shuts stretch of M23 near Gatwick

A section of a motorway near Gatwick is closed following a fatal crash involving a van.

The crash on the M23 coastbound carriageway happened at about 01:20 BST on Wednesday at junction nine for Crawley, National Highways said.

The M23 has been closed southbound between junction eight for the M25 near Merstham and junction 10 for the A264 at Crawley with a diversion in place.

Travel site Inrix says congestion is affecting the M25 in both directions around the M23 junction, with motorists heading for Gatwick Airport advised to allow extra time and to check for alternative routes.

A diversion has been put in place for traffic leaving the M25 at junction six at junction 6, following the A22 southbound towards Eastbourne, and then the A264 through Copthorne to junction 10 of the M23.

The road is expected to remain closed until late afternoon, National Highways said.
