Frankie Dettori thanks emergency services as he recovers at Addenbrooke’s from Six Mile Bottom crash

Jockey Frankie Dettori has thanked the emergency services after he sustained several broken ribs and a broken thumb when involved in a car crash at Six Mile Bottom. Dettori's injuries were assessed at Addenbrooke's Hospital[1] with scans and observation following the collision on Wednesday, 1 July.

In a post on X, Dettori said: "Thank you, everyone, for your kind messages and support. A huge thank you as well to the fantastic emergency staff who looked after me.

"I'm very sore and have a few broken ribs, so I'll be taking some time to rest and recover. I look forward to seeing you all again soon." In a statement, the 55-year-old's management company H Talent Management said: "Another vehicle struck the rear passenger side of the car Frankie was driving, causing it to spin and flip.

"Frankie was taken to hospital, where he was found to have sustained several broken ribs and a broken thumb. His injuries are still being assessed, and he remains in hospital for further scans and observation. "Frankie would like to thank the emergency services who attended the scene, together with the doctors, nurses and wider medical team caring for him.

"His focus is now on resting and recovering. H Talent Management respectfully asks that Frankie's privacy is respected at this time."

Dettori's wife, Catherine, told the Sun last Thursday: "He's bored of looking at hospital ceilings, which isn't a bad sign really." She said he was driving a two-seater Smart car they had borrowed from a friend as they had been travelling back and forth to America and did not have a car themselves.

Dettori, who achieved more than 3,000 wins in his glittering career, was reportedly heading out to buy ingredients for a meal of chicken, chillies and tomatoes.

After the crash, he managed to get himself out the car and on to the side of the road. An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called just after 6.55pm (on Wednesday, 1 July) to a road traffic collision on the A1304 near Six Mile Bottom. "Two ambulances and an ambulance officer vehicle were sent to the scene.

Two patients were transported to Addenbrooke's Hospital for further assessment and treatment." Cambridgeshire police said officers were called to reports of a collision between two cars on the A1304 London Road near Six Mile Bottom. The force said no arrests were made, adding: "Both drivers were taken to hospital as a precaution and an investigation is ongoing for traffic-related offences."

Dettori has not ridden in Britain since October 2023 when he won the Champion Stakes on King Of Steel at Ascot.

Now an ambassador for Amo Racing, he was due to return to the saddle in the Leger Legends race at Doncaster during the St Leger Festival in September.

In June 2000, Dettori survived a light aircraft crash in Newmarket that killed pilot Patrick Mackey, being dragged out of the wreckage by fellow jockey Ray Cochrane, who went on to be his agent.
