Highways worker from Kent killed in M23 crash as Croydon van driver arrested

A van driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drink driving after a highways worker from Kent was killed. Emergency services were called to the fatal collision on the southbound carriageway of the M23 in Crawley shortly before 1am today.

Sussex Police want to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident at Junction 9 of the motorway or who has dashcam footage. Sgt Chris Ambrose said: "A highways worker, a 65-year-old man from Kent, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

"His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time. "We are fully investigating the circumstances and we ask anyone who witnessed the collision or anyone who has dashcam footage to come forward." Police say the driver of the van, a 38-year-old man from Croydon, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drink driving.

He remains in custody. Officers are appealing for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage to email: [email protected], quoting Operation Oakcross. National Highways told KentOnline it will not be commenting at this time.

The southbound carriageway at Junction 9 is likely to be closed, with diversions, until late morning, and motorists are encouraged to find alternative routes.
