A North Tyneside road was closed on Sunday (July 5) with emergency services called to the scene following a traffic incident - here are the key details so far

  • Traffic data on Sunday morning showed the A188 Benton Road was closed in both directions from Balliol Business Park to A191 Benton Park Road, causing slow traffic.
  • Traffic cameras showed emergency services in attendance at the scene, with police tape and traffic cones blocking the area.
  • It was subsequently confirmed that the incident had taken place at the junction near Four Lane Ends on Benton Road that leads to West Farm Avenue and Goathland Avenue.
  • A Forensic Collision Investigation Unit police van was seen at the junction as officers were pictured assessing the road.
  • The North East Ambulance Service confirmed just after midday that one person had been taken to hospital.
  • The service said that they received a call at 9.26am on Sunday to reports of a road traffic incident.
  • An ambulance crew and specialist paramedic was dispatched to the scene.
  • Support was also requested from the Great North Air Ambulance Service, who attended the incident by air.
  • The Great North Air Ambulance Service confirmed that their critical care team arrived on the scene just after 10am, with two paramedics and a doctor working alongside the North East Ambulance Service to assess and treat a patient.
  • One person was taken to the RVI in Newcastle by road for "further treatment".
