The criminals locked up in Greater Manchester in June

A trio of murderers teaming up to stab a child killer to death in a notorious prison; a thug who attacked two police officers during a fracas at Manchester Airport[1] and a rapist who watched on as innocent man served 17 years in prison for a crime he did not commit are among those locked up in Greater Manchester this week..

Our courts doled out hefty prison sentences last month, with dozens of criminals jailed for a range of offences. The Manchester Evening News, as always, was on hand to document the most high-profile cases.

Here is a round-up of the criminals locked up in our region last month...

Depraved monster Jamie Varley, who murdered and abused Preston Davey[2], was told he will never be released from prison after being handed a whole life order.

His partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, who took part in a sick sex attack on the baby four days before he died, was jailed for 25 years.

Preston was just 13-months-old when he died following a final sex attack by former teacher Varley.[3] The paedophile treated Preston as his 'personal plaything', subjecting him to ever increasing physical, psychological and sexual abuse in the four months the baby lived at the house in Staining Road, Blackpool.

John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, turned a blind eye to Varley's abuse of Preston and on July 24, 2023, joined in a sickening sexual attack while the little boy slumped over the bars of his cot.

Mark 'The Iceman' Fellows, Lee Newell and David Taylor

Three convicted murderers were handed whole life terms after a child killer was stabbed to death in his cell.

Mark 'The Iceman' Fellows, 45, who previously shot dead 'gangland kingpins' Paul Massey and John Kinsella[5]; David Taylor, 64; and Lee Newell, 57; were all convicted of murdering 33-year-old Kyle Bevan in HMP Wakefield following a trial at Leeds Crown Court.

The trio teamed up to murder Bevan, who had been serving a life sentence[6] for killing Lola James, his two-year-old step daughter, at the home they shared in Wales.

Leeds Crown Court heard that Bevan was stabbed 25 times in his cell with improvised weapons in the jail on November 4 last year. After the attack his body was placed in his bed, covered with a blanket and made to look as if he were asleep.

CCTV footage from inside the jail showed the three category A prisoners following Bevan into his cell, one by one.

Once they left the cell just under five minutes later, Bevan was never seen alive again.

His body was not discovered until the following morning, when he had already been dead for hours and after officers had carried out checks at the door of his cell.

Prosecutors said the trio disliked vulnerable prisoners including sex offenders and those who had committed crimes against children, and claimed they may have wanted to be transferred out of HMP Wakefield.

Fellows and Newell were in the West Yorkshire prison serving whole life orders, the most severe sentence which judges can pass in the English criminal justice system, meaning they must serve the rest of their days behind bars.

David Taylor(Image: CPS)

Fellows was behind bars for murdering Massey and Kinsella[7] following the eruption of gang warfare in Salford[8]. Hitman Fellows was allied with the city's Anti A-Team faction, said to be led by Michael Carroll, with 'Mr Big' Massey considered as being a mentor figure to the alleged leader of the A-Team, Stephen Britton.

Fellows blasted Massey outside his own home[9] with an Uzi sub machine gun in July 2015. Then in May 2018, Fellows shot dead John Kinsella as he walked his dog in Merseyside.

Kinsella had carried Massey's coffin at his funeral.

Newell was handed a whole life order in 2013 for murdering child killer Subhan Anwar in HMP Long Lartin in 2013. Anwar, from Huddersfield, was serving a life sentence for the murder of his partner's two-year-old daughter. At the time of the killing in the Worcestershire jail, Newell had already been serving a life sentence for strangling his neighbour, 56-year-old Mary Neal, to death in Norwich in 1988.

Taylor has also admitted murdering Alisha Apostoloff-Boyarin,[10] who was reported missing by her family in February 2022.

Her body has never been found.

Taylor then tried to murder a Greater Manchester Police[11] officer who had attended HMP Frankland in Durham, where Taylor was then being held, to interview him about Alisha's disappearance. Taylor had claimed to have information about her whereabouts.

But during an interview in July 2024, Taylor produced an improvised weapon and stabbed Detective Constable Darren Bratby to the chest, an attack captured on shocking CCTV footage.

At a sentencing hearing on Friday, all three defendants were handed a 'new' whole life order, meaning they will never be released from prison.

A thug who violently assaulted two female police officers and a member of the public during a 'cowardly attack' at Manchester Airport[13] was jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 21, was jailed at Liverpool Crown Court after he was convicted last year of assaulting PC Lydia Ward causing her actual bodily harm during an attack in July 2024 that went viral on social media.

The court previously heard how Pc Ward suffered a broken nose as police bodycam footage showed her bloodied and sobbing and that Amaaz knocked Pc Ellie Cook to the ground with a series of elbows and punches during the attack.

A driver being chased by police turned around and drove the wrong way up the M60[20] in a last desperate bid to evade arrest.

Amaar Abid, was behind the wheel of a Volkswagen Golf which officers tried to stop it after it drove through a red light on Alan Turing Way in east Manchester at around 1.20am in the early hours of Tuesday, June 10 last year.

However Abid drove off and was pursued by officers up Hyde[21] Road through Gorton[22] and Denton[23] and onto the M60 heading towards Oldham[24].

He drove 'erratically' throughout the chase and repeatedly slowed to a 'crawling pace' on the motorway, Greater Manchester Police[25] (GMP) said.

Due to the manner of his driving and in a bid to reduce the risk to the public, police put a rolling road block in place on the M60.

Abid, of Copster Hill Road, Oldham, was jailed for 38 weeks at Manchester Magistrates Court for dangerous driving.

"You don't think I've murdered him, do you?" was the question Daryl Berman asked a police officer after they were called to her home when her husband had suffered a fatal chest wound.

David Berman, 84, was injured during an incident at their house on Butterstile Lane, Prestwich[27], last year.

Prosecutors said Berman deliberately stabbed her husband 'for a reason known only to her'.

She called 999 at 1.55pm on March 13, 2025, to report that her husband was hurt. He was pronounced dead at their home at 2.39pm.

Mrs Berman, 72, maintains it was an accident. Jurors said she was lying.

She was found guilty of murdering her husband on Tuesday 23, June after a week long trial at Minshull Street Crown Court.

Berman was remanded into custody and will be sentenced on July 3.

Asad Hussain

A Stockport[29] man who used a fake Tinder account to invite dozens of strangers around to his ex's home has been jailed for stalking.

Asad Hussain was today (June 29) handed a jail sentence of eight years at Chester Crown Court, where he was unanimously convicted of stalking involving serious harm and distress, assault by beating, and failing to provide the password to his devices following a trial in April this year.

His victim, who he met over Facebook posing under a fake name, said in a statement read out by prosecution barrister Gemma Gordon that Hussain had 'lied from day one' and that the 'terrifying ordeal' had 'shattered' her family.

The court heard that the pair had dated briefly in 2024 but that Hussain had become 'possessive, jealous and controlling', 'turning up at her address at all hours' and questioning her about other men.

After the relationship ended, Hussain continued to contact her friends and daughters in attempts to get back together. By July he had created a fake Tinder account using her details.

Jailing him for seven years for stalking and an additional 12 months for failing to comply with the RIPA notice, Judge Leeming told Hussain, of Hankinson Avenue, Heald Green, that his offending had a 'substantial impact' on the victim's life.

"She does not know how many men have her information and think this is what she wants," he said. "She says she is unable to sleep or eat, that your behaviour has ruined her life and shattered her relationships with her children.

"She has installed extensive security measures in her home including a six-foot gate and indoor and outdoor CCTV.

"In refusing to give your password, your attitude has been one of obstruction from the start. You were said to be at a low risk of reoffending but you maintain your innocence and say you have not done anything wrong."

"I find you present a high risk to the victim and to any future partners," the judge concluded, also handing Hussain a 15-year restraining order against the victim and her two daughters.

Tariq Sarwar(Image: Manchester Evening News)

An 'arrogant' businessman was jailed this month for 'flagrantly' flouting a disqualification order - and for hastily getting rid of GBP3 million weeks before his assets were set to be liquidated.

Tariq Sarwar, 59, and Christopher Francis, 40, were sentenced this month for their involvement in the scheme which saw massive sums of money transferred to Mr Francis' company - before being 'filtered back' to Mr Sarwar through companies linked to his family.

Manchester Crown Court[31] heard today how Sarwar, of Gore Lane in Alderley Edge, had been hit with a Director Disqualification Order in 2013.

These orders ban individuals from acting as company directors or from having any involvement in management.

But Sarwar went on to flout the order, choosing that very same to year to set up two more property management companies in his wife Zarka's name, A Property Management and Willowloch.

Francis was handed a 25 month sentence, suspended for two years, and 250 hours of unpaid work.

A depraved teacher abused a girl at school and his home after plying her with drugs and alcohol.

Gary Day-Davies, 55, taught at a school in Salford[33] where he attacked the girl, as well as at home after inviting her for extra tuition, Greater Manchester Police[34] said.

He has now been jailed for 15 years after being found guilty following a trial at Liverpool Crown Court. The force said that following the investigation into the 'non-recent' abuse, Day-Davies claimed the victim must have held a 'grudge' against him.

A driver who pepper sprayed two men after a row over a parking space in a leafy Cheshire village has been jailed. Curtis Rogerson, 45, left his victims with 'burning' faces after launching the 'terrifying' attack in Lymm last Autumn.

The men were in a van which had begun reversing into a parking space near Eagle Brow, in the centre of the village, when Rogerson drove his car into it first.

One of the men 'shouted his annoyance', police said, prompting Rogerson to fly into a rage.

The men were were still the in the van, which had now found another space, when Rogerson pulled his car up alongside them, hitting the driver's side wing mirror.

He then sprayed a then unknown substance through the open window into the men's faces before driving off.

The substance was tested and identified as Capsaicinoids, which are typically found in pepper sprays. The two men have thankfully since made a full recovery, the force added.

A woman groomed a vulnerable teenager before having sex with him.

Emma Hurley, 44, was in a position of authority when she entered into a 'relationship' with the boy, who was under 16.

He has additional educational needs, Manchester Crown Court heard as Hurley was jailed. Police went to his home to tell his parents about the relationship. The boy denied what officers said, but days later was seen in her car when she was pulled over.

"In the car was cannabis, nitrous oxide canisters, a machete and two small knives," Hannah Forsyth, prosecuting, said. "He was under the influence of drugs and he was arrested.

He said he had been groomed by the defendant. A road side drug test revealed that he was positive for cannabis.

"Afterwards he denied he was in a sexual relationship with the defendant." The boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, said Hurley followed him on Instagram, before she started sending him 'freaky and sexy reels'.

They swapped numbers and met up, the court heard, before she performed a sex act on him in her car. They continued messaging and met up again, before having sex.

The boy said he had never had sex before.

He told police they had sex at hotels, including after a night out together. The boy then stopped the interview with detectives and 'disengaged'. Analysis of his phone revealed 775 calls with Hurley over two months, as well as over 10,000 messages.

A brave police officer wept as he faced the cocaine and booze-fuelled driver who left him with horrific injuries in a high-speed horror crash.

PC Rushton looked Shaun Orchard in the eye as he told him: "I no longer recognise the person I used to be." It came as the 23-year-old was locked up for three years and two months following the smash on April 21 last year.

Orchard, Minshull Street Crown Court heard, stole his stepdad's car after sinking pints at the pub and snorting cocaine.

When he was tracked down by police, he led them on a chase that ended in a horrific smash.

Reading a statement to the court, PC Rushton wept as he said: "Before this collision I was proud of who I was. I was proud to serve as a police officer. It was never just a job to me - it was a vocation, a passion... something I dreamed about doing since I was a child and dedicated years of my life to achieve that role.

"I was independent, motivated and excited about the future.

I genuinely believed the best years of my life were ahead of me. That all changed because of the defendant's selfish and reckless actions."

A drug mule stopped at Manchester Airport[44] told border force officers: "I'm in a lot of trouble."

George Stables arrived at the airport on February 1 this year, having flown in from Bangkok, Thailand, via Doha. He was escorted by officials to collect his two suitcases and asked if he had anything to declare.

The 34-year-old replied: "No, I'm in a lot of trouble, somebody asked me to bring these cases." Stables said he didn't pack them and didn't know what was inside.

"The two suitcases were searched and were found to contain 29 vacuum sealed packages," Emily Freeman, prosecuting, told Manchester Crown Court[45].

"Analysis of the packages revealed them to be cannabis. The total weight was 33.95kg, and an estimated wholesale value of GBP92,000 and street value of GBP290,000."

Stables, of Baulk Lane in Harworth, Doncaster, was jailed for two years and three months.

An online child sex abuse predator told police he was a 'paedophile hunter'.

Rhys Meikle, from Openshaw, Manchester, was 'operating as a prolific paedophile online' before he was caught.

That claim was 'a cover story in case he was ever caught', police said as he was locked up. He distributed and traded 'the most abhorrent child sexual abuse material' with other sex offenders, detectives added.

Police raided his home in Openshaw in May 2024 after intelligence that indecent images of children had been shared online.

He was arrested and his electronic devices were seized for examination, before he was bailed.

But the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit (NWROCU) said he committed further offences while on bail - engaging with another individual online to share indecent images and videos of children and attempted to arrange their sexual abuse.

During their conversations, police said Meikle 'indicated an intention to travel to abuse children', discussed obtaining and distributing indecent images and suggested he had 'a significant amount' of child sexual abuse pictures and videos.

Meikle, 31, of no fixed address, was jailed for four years at Manchester Crown Court[47] on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to arranging or facilitating the commission of child sexual offence and making; and distributing indecent images of children. He also received an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and was placed on the sex offender register indefinitely.

Iain Potter, Jack Wright and Ross Fathi were jailed[49] after police smashed a 'highly sophisticated' mail order drugs gang.

The trio ran the 'industrial-scale' operation from a distribution hub in Edenfield, Bury[50], using the Royal Mail to deliver thousands of parcels of drugs to their customers.

The warehouse was kitted out with packaging stations, vacuum sealing machines, label printers, and hundreds of Royal Mail bags ready for dispatch.

When police raided the unit they discovered a staggering array of illegal substances including cocaine, MDMA, ketamine, LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, cannabis resin, THC edibles and more.

Potter, 45, of Sefton Drive, Liverpool; and Wright, 30, of Westgate Lane, Wakefield were both jailed for 11 years and four months for conspiracy to supply Class A and B drugs.

Fathi, 46, of Wingfield Drive, Wilmslow[51] was sentenced to six years in prison for the same charges.

Rapist Paul Quinn - who watched on as an innocent man served 17 years in prison for a crime he did not commit - faced justice this month.

Andrew Malkinson spent 17 years in prison after being wrongfully convicted of the brutal rape and attack of a 33-year-old mother-of-two as she walked home in the early hours of July 19, 2003.

The woman was followed and then dragged down a motorway embankment off Cleggs Lane in Little Hulton, Salford[53], near the M61, where she was viciously attacked and raped.

Despite no DNA evidence linking Mr Malkinson to the notorious crime, he was prosecuted and convicted after the woman said she had been '100 per cent' sure that he was the perpetrator.

In 2004 at Manchester Crown Court[54], Mr Malkinson received a life sentence and was ordered to serve at least seven years behind bars. But he remained in prison until 2020, as he maintained his innocence and tried to lodge appeals to clear his name.

He was only cleared in 2023.

On Friday (June 5), at the same courthouse, Quinn, 52, received an extended sentence for public protection, comprising of 21 years in prison and an extra three years on licence.

He will serve two-thirds of the 21 year sentence before he can be considered for release by the Parole Board. In April, following a trial, he was found guilty of two counts of rape and well as inflicting GBH and a charge of attempting to choke, suffocate or strangle with intent.

Double killer David Jack's breathtaking callousness was laid bare as he was jailed. He said he 'wanted to finish his last four cans of beer' before police were alerted to the murder of Paul Anderson last December[56].

The 55-year-old was his second victim.

Jack, 59, killed Rampersaud Ramnarine[57] in 'strikingly similar' circumstances 12 years earlier. He was convicted of manslaughter following the 53-year-old's death in 2013.

Jack 'bragged' about killing Mr Ramnarine, telling someone: "I choked him out on purpose until he was dead. I did it on purpose and got off with manslaughter."

He was jailed for life for murder, with a minimum term of 26 years and six months, on Tuesday (June 2).

A judge described Jack as a 'highly dangerous man prone to aggression and with a violent temper'.

Megan Murphy(Image: GMP)

A killer driver who repeatedly drove over a vulnerable man in the road has been jailed for six years and banned from the road for eight.

Personal trainer and CrossFit athlete Megan Murphy, 26, spent a matter of seconds[59] trying to defrost her windscreen in the early hours of January 9 last year before driving the wrong way down a one-way road near her former home in Marsh Green, Wigan[60].

Darryl Tomlinson, 31, who lived around the corner from Murphy, had collapsed in the middle of the road following an evening out drinking with friends. Murphy drove over him, reversed and drove over him again.

Immediately after, she lied to police and said 'I didn't see him', before telling a friend she had just 'reversed over him'. A court heard she called Mr Tomlinson a 'smackhead' while he was still under her car.

Neighbours had earlier called 999 after spotting Mr Tomlinson but 'in an awful twist of fate', neither police or paramedics 'could find the patient and never attended the scene'.

He died in the street.

Murphy, now of Lord Street, Ince, was today (June 24) jailed for six years after earlier pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. She was banned from the road for eight years.

Two men have been jailed and are due to be deported after a 'large-scale' cannabis grow was discovered in Bolton[64]. Neighbourhood officers raided a property on Newport Street back on December 23 last year, after receiving intelligence.

Greater Manchester Police[65] says it uncovered a 'substantial and fully operational' cannabis farm at the property, which had been 'professionally adapted' - including the illegal bypass of the electricity supply to power the grow.

CCTV footage was observed as part of enquiries which identified a black van attending the property in the days before the raid.

Two men were captured on camera accessing the secured building, and the vehicle was subsequently traced to Leonard Tota. The now-26-year-old was arrested the following day at his home address, where Ridgan Taga, 26, was also located.
