Scots motorists face 20-mile diversion as new speed cameras to be installed at notorious accident hotspot…

SCOTS drivers are set to face a lengthy 20-mile diversion on a busy trunk road to allow for new speed cameras to be installed.

The cameras will be fitted at Toll of Birness a notorious junction on the A90 in Aberdeenshire[1].

The area has been an accident black spot for several years including a site of some fatal crashes[2], which lead for calls to install the new safety[3] measures.

Motorists will see the lengthy diversion in place for nearly a week.

Drivers[4] are instructed to travel[5] through the A90T, the A950 at Mintlaw, and the A952 towards Fraserburgh, adding around an 18 and 40 minutes onto journeys.

Aberdeenshire Council warned drivers of the upcoming works where the road will be closed from Monday, July 22, and remain[6] shut for a further four days.

closure[7] from next Monday (July 22) for four days.

“Due to the requirement that a diversion must divert to roads that are the same class as the one that is closed, the formal detour is via the A90T (Peterhead), A950 (Mintlaw) and A952 (Toll of Birness).”

The cameras will be located near the fork junction, north of Ellon, which connects the north-east A90 Aberdeen to Peterhead road with the A952 heading to Fraserburgh.

New Gordon and Buchan Conservative MP Harriet Cross said at the time of the work[8] announcement: “At the Toll of Birness, the dangerous[9] layout of the junction is the biggest problem – not solely the speed of drivers.

“While there is no doubt cameras will help to reduce speeding, this measure is a sticking plaster to a much wider issue which stretches far beyond that.

“What is really needed to reduce the high number of devastating accidents is for the junction to be made into a roundabout and for the A90 north of Ellon to be dualled.”

It comes as a busy stretch of a major Scots motorway is set for further disruptions as[10] planned roadworks have been extended.

Motorists[11] have been warned the completion of essential works on the westbound M8 at between Junctions 18 at Charing X and 16 at Craighall in Glasgow[12] has been delayed by one week.

This scheme, delivered by Amey on behalf of the Scottish Government[13], is to enable the next[14] phase of works of the M8 Woodside Viaducts.

The latest round of westbound works that began on Sunday June 23 will now run until Friday August 9 from, 10pm until 6am, each night, excluding Friday nights and Saturday.
