The dad-of-one was dropped off in Carlisle after getting on the wrong bus, reports the Daily Record[3].
It’s understood he was hit by a vehicle later that evening, just after 8pm.
A GoFundMe[4] page has been launched to support John’s devastated family following the tragic incident.
So far, more than £1,400 has been raised.
“John was loved by all his family and friends, he was just about to turn 23 years old and sadly God took him too soon.
“He has a gorgeous wee boy and partner and really was adored.
“Please let’s take some pressure off his mum and give him the send-off he deserves.”
The Celtic Fan Group has called for a minute’s applause in John’s memory on the 23rd minute of the team’s match against Slovan Bratislava tomorrow.
Posting on X, they wrote: “This is John. He recently lost his life aged just 22. No age at all. He was at the Celtic game on Saturday.
“No one should ever go to a game and not come home, NO ONE. We ask that you please join in the minute’s applause on the 23rd minute on Wednesday night. Rest easy John.”
Friends and family flocked to social media[5] to remember John, who was last seen getting off a bus near Carlisle on Saturday.
One person wrote: ” Heartbreaking outcome. John, it was a pleasure to know you pal.”
A second said: “Such a good guy gone too soon.”
A third added: “Heartbreaking, a lovely young man.”
Cumbria Police is urging anyone who may have been travelling along the M6 at junction 42 or could have dashcam footage, to get in touch.
