Heartbreaking tributes pour in for ‘gentle and kind’ man as he dies weeks after being injured in Kerry crash

A MAN aged in his 80s, who was critically injured in a Co Kerry crash just before Christmas has sadly died.

Heartbreaking tributes have poured in for Charlie Curtin after he was rushed to hospital in a critical condition following a two-car accident[1] between Abbeyfeale and Castleisland on December 23rd.

Four other people travelling in the second car were also taken to hospital for assessment after the incident on the N21 at Knockbrack, Knocknagoshel.

Charlie, who was from Meeleitrim South, Knocknogoshel, Kerry[2], sadly passed away on Saturday at the University Hospital Kerry.

The Kerry man leaves behind his brother Tom, sister-in-law Sadie, nieces, nephews, grandnephews, grandnieces, relatives, “kind neighbours” and a wide circle of friends.

He is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Sarah, sisters, Sarah May, Tessie, Eileen and Kathleen and brothers, Danny, Timmy and Denny.


Heartbreaking tributes have poured in for Charlie over the weekend as news of his untimely death spreads across the community.

The Rooney family, who live in the USA, said: “Uncle Charleen you will be missed in so many ways, tremendous sense of humor, always great company and a heart of gold.

“So fortunate to have spent time with you last April.”

A neighbour of Charlie’s send her “deepest sympathy” to all the family and said he was a “much loved neighbour and friend” of her youth.

She added: “May he now enjoy eternal rest in heaven.”

Another mourner remembered Charlie as a “lovely, lovely man,” whilst a fourth branded him a “gentleman”.

A fifth said: “Was a pleasure to know you Charlie and the dog on my MOW round. You always had a smile and the chat.

“Will be a very missed stop on the round but i’ll wave when I pass your homestead by. Go well Charlie, good sir and gentleman.”

‘Great sense of humour’

Another added: “Sincere condolences to all the family and friends of Charles at this sad time.

“We will remember him as a gentle and kind man with great sense of humour. I was glad to have had the pleasure of knowing him. May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace.”

Charlie reposed at Leahy’s Funeral Home, Knocknagoshel this Monday evening, January 8 from 5pm to 7pm.

Requiem Mass will take place in St Mary’s Church, Knocknagoshel on Tuesday at 11am before he is laid to rest in a burial in the Old Cemetery Brosna.

Live streaming of Charlie’s Requiem Mass will be available on the St Mary’s Church Knocknagoshel Facebook page.

Gardai[3] appealed to anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.
