Hero workman recalls moment he pulled Glasgow schoolboy from fatal fireball road crash

A HERO workman told how he pulled a trapped schoolboy from a burning car – but was unable to save the lad’s mum.

Gavin Walsh leapt into action when he saw the horrific head-on smash[1] happen on a motorway right in front of him.

He jumped out of the Transit van he was a passenger in and ran to the Toyota Yaris which had caught fire. [2]

Within seconds he shattered the back window to try and get to whoever was caught inside and spotted Arran Martin, seven.

The youngster was the only survivor of the crash which claimed the life of his mum Jade McEnroe, 33.[3]

Her partner Jaroslaw Rossa, 42, also died along with his sons Filip, 15 and Dominic, seven.

Gavin told an inquest into their deaths on the M6 at Cumbria[5] that he didn’t get a chance to help anyone else who was stuck in the motor.

He said: “We really did try. I can assure everyone we did our best. We only had minimal time.

“I saved a life that day and I hope never to witness anything like that again.

“God bless you Arran, I have never stopped thinking about you. I hope we will meet again one day and I will give you a massive hug.”

Cockermouth Coroner’s Court was told that the crash in October last year was caused by drunk ex-fighter Pilot Richard Woods.

He drove the wrong way down the motorway in his Skoda Fabia at speeds of up to 70mph, while almost four times the drink drive limit.

At the hearing cops said that had he survived he would have been charged with killing everyone who died in the car.

Jade’s parents Marie McEnroe and George McNellis told the coroner they blamed him for her death.

Ms McEnroe said: “It was definitely murder. That’s the only word.”

Mr McNellis said: “He definitely murdered my daughter.”

Spa therapist Jade had been in a relationship with Mr Rossa for more than two years and was happy.

The granny added: “Life changed forever that day”.

“I miss Jade every single day. I want to know why? Why them? Arran keeps us going every single day.”

Cumbria coroner Margaret Taylor praised the “selfless acts of bravery” from those at the crash site, including Gavin.

She said: “Without his swift response, Jade’s child would also have perished.”

Addressing the bereaved family members, she said: “Your loss is unimaginable but you have conducted yourself with dignity and I thank you for that.

  • Killer lorry driver ploughed truck into heavily pregnant nurse on Scots motorway days after she celebrated baby shower

A LORRY driver killed a heavily pregnant nurse in a horror motorway crash.

Trevor Norgate, 58, was behind the wheel of his HGV when it drifted onto the hard shoulder where Evelyn Brown, 41, had stopped in her Kia Sorento[1].

Footage of the smash on the M8 westbound near Hermiston Gait in Edinburgh[2] on December 18 2023 was captured on Norgate’s dash cam.

Evelyn – known as Eve – passed away from her injuries[3]. She was 34 weeks pregnant at time and her unborn baby tragically did not survive either.

Prosecutors stated Norgate had “allowed himself to become distracted” prior to the collision[4] although it is not known how.

He appeared in the dock at the High Court[5] in Glasgow today where he pleaded guilty to a charge of causing death by dangerous[6] driving[7].

Lanarkshire[8], already had six points on his licence[9] at the time for using a mobile phone[10] while on the road.

He was remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced next month.

Prosecutor Jennifer Cameron told how Evelyn was born in Nigeria and moved to the UK in 2015.

She already had two young children at the time of the crash.

Evelyn worked as an agency nurse for a company called Medline.

She had not long finished a 12-hour shift at East Lothian Community Hospital in Haddington when tragedy struck that morning.

Miss Cameron said the mum had texted her sister to say she was on her way home.

Norgate meantime was driving his haulage firm HGV having started work at 4am that day.

He had “complied with rest requirements” while behind the wheel of his lorry.

The court went on to be shown harrowing footage of the collision.

Evelyn’s car had been stationary on the hard shoulder at the time with its lights on.

Miss Cameron: “The HGV began to veer from the lane onto the hard shoulder.

“The vehicle drifted over a period of between seven to eight seconds with no corrective action being taken or braking to alter the course of travel.

“The lorry travelled on the hard shoulder for approximately 88.5 metres until the point of impact with the rear of Evelyn Brown vehicle.

“It is noted there is no sound or exclamation within the cab (of the lorry) immediately before impact confirming Norgate, at that time, did not have his eyes on the road.”

The advocate depute added Norgate “ought to have seen” the Kia on the hard shoulder.

Norgate immediately got out and dialled 999. A passing doctor stopped to give an unresponsive Evelyn first aid.

Fire crews then arrived to get her out of the wrecked car.

Paramedics[11] tried valiantly to help at the scene, but Evelyn never recovered.

She had suffered fatal neck and chest injuries. Evelyn’s unborn baby also did not survive.

Norgate went on to make a number of comments to police[12] including he had “moved in his lane” for “something in the road”.

But, Miss Cameron said there was “no evidence to substantiate” this claim.

She added, instead, the dash cam footage showed “a slow, continuous motion” on the hard shoulder that morning with “no signs of driver interaction”.

Evelyn, also of Bellshill, lived with her wheelchair-bound mother at the time.

She also had a lifelong friend who had moved from Nigeria to be with the nurse.

Evelyn’s two children now stay with their father, but return to visit their grandmother on a weekly basis.

Miss Cameron: “The family have felt the loss keenly. Miss Brown’s mother has been extremely distressed since and has not felt able to attend court.

“The children, on family visits, often ask when their mum is going to come home from work.”

David Nicolson, defending, said Norgate gave his “sincere apologies” for what happened.

The KC added: “He has done what he now can and hopefully the next of kin can take comfort from that.”

Mr Nicolson did not move for Norgate’s bail to be continued.

Lord Armstrong deferred sentencing until April 24 in Edinburgh.

fundraiser[13] later set up in her name quickly raised thousands of pounds to help her family.
