Funeral details confirmed for ‘generous’ and ‘kind’ man killed in Donegal smash as heartbreaking tributes pour in

A YOUNG man who lost his life in a Christmas car crash in Co Donegal on Monday will be laid to rest on Friday, his family have confirmed.

Talented musician Paul Mooney was killed when the car he was a passenger in was involved in a two-car collision[1] on the main Letterkenny to Lifford Road.

The well-known son of local Ramelton couple Gwen and Morgan Mooney was aged in his 30s and has two sisters.

He was a member of the popular band Boy M5 and was known for his gigs as a solo artist in bars under the name Mooney.

Paul, who is the tenth person to be killed on the roads of Donegal[2] this year, is reposing at his home with a wake today and tomorrow from 11am until 10pm.

Those attending the wake between the hours of 6pm and 9pm should park at St Mary’s Church, Ramelton and a bus will be provided from there.

A notice on RIP.ie reads: “Mooney, Paul, Jupama, Glen Lower, Ramelton, Co. Donegal, F92 F821, December 18th, 2023, suddenly as a result of a road traffic accident.

“Deeply regretted by his loving parents Morgan and Gwen, partner Nicolle, sisters Maeve and Julianne and their partners Seamus and David, nana Frances, uncles, aunts, cousins, extended family and friends.”

Heartbreaking tributes have poured in for “gentleman” Paul, who has been remembered fondly for his kind demeanour and musical talent.

A family friend said: “Gwen, Morgan, Maeve and Julieanne, our hearts go out to you. We are so deeply sorry for the tragic loss of your darling son Paul.

“Such a lovely, kind and gentle young man. Your family got together to celebrate every occasion and I was always struck by how close you were. May you find comfort and peace in the love that you shared.”

Another mourner told how they were “grateful” to have the “good fortune” to get to know Paul over the summer at a residency.

They said: “His musical talent, generous nature and warm personality was enjoyed by all of us.

“Those recordings are now a precious reminder of that special, yet fleeting time making music together – and the songs forevermore connected with Paul‘s kind spirit. Rest in peace my friend.”

‘SWEET AND TALENTED GUY’

Cora Harkin Music posted: “Devastated to learn of the passing of mentor, band mate and friend Paul Mooney. So privileged to have shared the stage, studio and rehearsal room.

“Such a sweet and talented guy. Our condolences go out to Paul’s family and friends. Thinking of Nicole and Kyle and all the Boy M5 lads. Rest in peace.”

A previous teacher of Paul’s added: “So sad to hear of Pauls passing. I had the utmost pleasure of teaching Paul in St.Eunans College years ago.

“‘Gentleman’ is not a strong enough word to describe his kind demeanor. I always remember being blown away by his talented guitar skills. RIP young man.”

The drivers of the two other cars involved in the tragic crash were also taken to hospital for treatment but their injuries are not understood to be life-threatening.

Gardai[4] in Letterkenny Garda Station are appealing to anyone who may have information in relation to this collision to contact them.

A spokesperson said yesterday: “Any road users who were on the N14, on Monday evening 18th December, 2023 between 6.30pm and 7pm and who may have camera footage (including dash cam) is asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with information in relation to this collision is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda Station on 074 916 7100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”
