Thousands of drivers caught speeding by temporary police cameras on Scots motorway – did you notice them?…

THOUSANDS of drivers were caught out by temporary speed cameras on a busy Scottish motorway over a period of two months.

Safety Camera Scotland revealed that over 5,000 speeding offences were recorded while a 40mph temporary speed limit was enforced on the M80.

The temporary cameras were placed on the southbound carriageway, leading onto the M8 westbound, between Junctions 14 and 13 near Glasgow[1] while essential works were being carried out.

They were removed last week following completion of the works by Amey.

Cameras were enforced between April 2 and June 17 to improve speed limit compliance while work was ongoing.

And a total of 5,158 speeding offences were recorded by Police Scotland[2] Safety Cameras.

“Those most at risk in the event of a collision at these locations are the road workers as they have no protective shield to absorb energy from the impact.

“The TASCAR has been shown to increase speed limit compliance and improve driver behaviour at locations where essential work is being undertaken.

“Even the smallest reductions in traffic speeds can deliver major improvements to road safety and the average speed cameras assist in delivering a safer environment for all road users.”

We told in April that over 100 speed cameras across Scotland are set to be turned off[3] due to improved driver behaviour.

Safety Cameras Scotland revealed that several sites in the east and west of the country will be inactive.

A total of 119 cameras will be covered up following a “comprehensive national performance review”.

The review was conducted in collaboration with 33 road authorities.

Safety Cameras Scotland found that over the past five years, driver behaviour and speed limit compliance has improved due to camera enforcement.
