Three people were killed and more injured after a van rampage in Nottingham city centre.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after reports a vehicle had run over people walking in the Midlands[1] city.

Police were called to Ilkeston Road where two people were found dead in the street leading into the city centre at 4am on Tuesday.

Officers then rushed to Milton Street following reports that a van had attempted to run over three people. They are currently being treated in hospital.

A man was then found dead on Magdala Road in the suburbs near Sherwood.

Eyewitness Lyn Haggitt told Channel 4 that the van driver mounted a curb striking a man and woman as he was followed by police.

She said: “The white van quickened up to the corner of the street and went into two people.

“The lady ended up on the curb.

“To me he went straight into them, he didn’t even bother to turn. He went bang straight into them.

“The man was [badly hurt] but they got him to his feet with a whopping great head wound. But he managed to get up.”

She said that he backed up and sped away on Parliament Street with police continuing to give chase.

“You just don’t want to see that sort of thing at half-five,” she added.

One shopowner, just outside the cordon on Upper Parliament Street, arrived to find nearly all of the city centre cordoned off by police.

She told the Standard: “It’s just crazy. I have never seen anything like it in Nottingham. People have been told they won’t be opening today but not much else.”

GB News published footage of a suspect being arrested by armed officers after being pulled from a smashed up white van.

A student told the broadcaster: “We woke up at about 5.30am this morning to what sounded like gunshots.

“We ran to the window and there were armed police running out of what looked like an undercover car.

“Then the suspect was in a van and was tasered and dragged out and then later arrested.

“We saw a man pinned down on the ground and more armed police turned up.

“They searched the back of the van and they pulled an absolutely massive knife out the back of the van.”

Chief Constable Kate Meynell said: “This is a horrific and tragic incident which has claimed the lives of three people.

“We believe these three incidents are all linked and we have a man in custody.

“This investigation is at its early stages and a team of detectives is working to establish exactly what has happened.

“We ask the public to be patient while inquiries continue. At this time, a number of roads in the city will remain closed as this investigation progresses.”

Roads cordoned off include Ilkeston Road, Milton Street, Maples Street, and Woodborough Road, from the junction with Magdala Road into the city.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tweeted his support for the police following the “shocking” incident.

He tweeted: “I want to thank the police and emergency services for their ongoing response to the shocking incident in Nottingham this morning. I am being kept updated on developments.

“The police must be given the time to undertake their work. My thoughts are with those injured, and the family and loved ones of those who have lost their lives.”

Robert Jenrick, MP for Newark in Nottinghamshire, also thanked emergency services for their “swift response”.

In a tweet, he said: “I’m deeply grateful to @nottspolice[2] and all those who responded to the terrible attack earlier today in Nottingham.

“All of us in Nottinghamshire share a sense of shock. My thoughts and prayers are with those injured and with the family and friends of those killed.”

The Nottingham Express Transit (NET) tram network said it has suspended all services due to “major police incidents around the city and suburbs”.
