8 offenders who were jailed at Nottingham Crown Court in July

Two awful rape cases were heard in court this month – both unconnected – involving attacks on strangers. One concerned the prosecution of rapist Andre Ivanov, who was just 18 years old when he targeted his victim as she walked alone in Newark.

She escaped when Ivanov was disturbed by a passer-by at around midnight on October 21 last year. Ivanov, now aged 19 and from Edwin Place, North Gate, Newark, pleaded guilty to two charges of rape on the same woman and was sentenced on Wednesday (July 19) to nine years in youth custody and five on extended licence. The second rape case, saw a man jailed for stalking and raping a teenage girl in Nottingham[2]. Shane Nash admitted to carrying out the attack in Top Valley on January 29.

The 39-year-old followed the child into an alleyway before dragging her into nearby bushes, tying up her hands and mouth. Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday, July 12, Nash, of Boniface Gardens, Bestwood, was given a life sentence, of which he will serve a minimum of 15 years in prison. Following this, another sex offender Junaid Zaman, 25, of Wollaton[7] Hall Drive, Lenton, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault. He struck at night when he asked his victims for directions in the Lenton[8] area.

He appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday, July 18, and was jailed for 12 months. Read the full story here[9]

Other cases before the court

Masked raiders who tied up an elderly couple in a terrifying burglary both went to jail. Simon Hinton, 51, of Golf Close Bulwell[10], carried out an aggravated burglary in Spring Hill, Kimberley, on October 16, 2020, with Dale Wright, 42, of Lynncroft, Eastwood[11].

One of the householders, a 78-year-old man, was hit with a mallet after he and his partner were taken out of bed and had their hands bound with zip ties during the frightening ordeal which lasted about two hours.

In March this year, Wright received seven years and two months in prison for his role in a drugs conspiracy. Last week he was handed eight years consecutively, with a two-third term to serve before release, and one month concurrently for taking a vehicle without consent.

Hinton was jailed for the same offences and a second aggravated burglary at a house involving three victims in Holly Road in Watnall on October 8, 2020, where he went armed with a sword. Read the full story here[12]

And robber David Lafferty was jailed after he wore a black bin bag over his face whilst stealing cash from a petrol station in Sutton-in-Ashfield[13].

The 43-year-old pleaded guilty to robbery after forensic experts found traces of his DNA on both the black bin bag he’d used to cover his face and a cigarette butt found at the scene. He attended Nottingham Crown Court on Friday, July 14, where he was jailed for four years and six months. Read the full story here[14]

And a man who believed he was sending sexual images to a 13-year-old girl was jailed for three years and four months. Christopher Rowe, aged 29, of Pringle Road, Brinsworth, Rotherham, was actually sending the explicit messages[15], images and videos to an adult member of an online activist group.

He admitted attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child, attempting to incite a girl to engage in sexual activity, and attempting to cause a child to look at an image of sexual activity. Read the full story here[16]

In another case before the court, banned driver Nathan Aitchison, 38, of Claydon Road in Leicester, was sentenced to five years in prison for causing another motorist’s death. David Obada was driving his Fiat Punto near Car Colston in Rushcliffe when Aitchison lost control and ran into the back of him.

After being hit, Mr Obada’s car crashed into the central reservation barrier, rolled onto its roof and came to rest sideways in the middle of the dual carriageway without its lights on. The incident took place at around 9.15pm on September 24 last year and later saw a Volkswagen Transporter van striking the Fiat Punto.

Aitchison was disqualified from driving at the time of the crash – and he later admitted charges of causing death by careless driving and causing death by driving while disqualified As well as his prison sentence, Aitchison was disqualified from driving for eight years and three months.
