Inquest opens into death of man who died at scene of Nottinghamshire crash
A provisional cause of death has been given as “neck injury” as an inquest opened into the death of a man involved in a collision in Nottinghamshire. Lucian David Abbey was named by police after he died in a crash between two vans in Bircotes.
Mr Abbey[1], 51, died at the scene after a collision[2] involving two vans in Bawtry Road, Bircotes[3], at 9.45am on Thursday, March 9, Nottinghamshire Police said at the time. The road was closed in both directions for most of the day whilst emergency services attended. Another driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Mr Abbey, from the Leeds area, was identified by a cousin who went to Queen’s Medical Centre[4], Nottingham, on March 11 this year. A full inquest into his death will follow at a later date – but the inquiry was formerly opened in Nottingham on Friday (September 15).
Nottinghamshire assistant coroner Neena Sharma read into the record his date of birth and the date he died, on March 9, on the A614 Bawtry Road, Bircotes. She noted the cousin as the person who made the identification to one of her officers.
A post mortem found the provisional cause of death as “neck injury” but further inquiries need to be made. The final hearing is on a date to be fixed.
Miss Sharma ended by passing on her sincere condolences to Mr Abbey’s family and friends. Detective Constable Liah Lane, of Nottinghamshire Police[5] ’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said at the time: “A man sadly lost his life following this tragic incident and our thoughts remain with his family and friends at this most difficult time.
“We continue to urge anyone who witnessed this incident or has any dash-cam footage to get in touch on 101, quoting incident number 149 of March 9 2023.”
