56 motorists charged in Nottinghamshire drink drive campaign
More than 50 drivers are already facing the repercussions after being charged with drink or drug driving on Nottinghamshire’s roads this month.[1] Nottinghamshire Police continue to warn motorists of the dangers and consequences over the festive and New Year period. A total of 56 suspects have been charged as a result of investigations carried out by the force during its drink and drug drive campaign (figures are from midnight on 1 December to early hours of 18 December 2023).
Last year, between 1 December 2022 and 1 January 2023, a total of 237 drink and drug drivers were investigated by Nottinghamshire Police. Of these, 58 had been involved in a collision.

Nottinghamshire Police has been using a mixture of public engagement, education, and enforcement to keep the county’s roads safe as part of its ‘A Deadly Mix’ campaign, which aims to educate people of the dangers and consequences of drink and drug driving. The force has held a series of interactive public roadshows, in Nottingham and Mansfield, inviting members of the public to take part in some sobriety tests including being challenged to try on a pair of ‘beer googles’ and walk in a straight line, simulating how alcohol or drugs can impair your reactions.
In a unique move, officers also handed out sobriety activity packs to those taking part. These educational packs included a selection of activities and tasks people can complete with family and friends, raising wider awareness in a bid to make our roads safer. They included pairs of ‘beer goggles’, simulating how alcohol can affect your reactions and impair your ability to drive, a true and false game, a QR code participants can use to give their feedback on their experiences, and informative materials for people to read.
Hard-hitting facts were also shared with members of the public, increasing their knowledge concerning the devastating impact of drink and drug driving. As well as this education and prevention work, officers continue to be out and about carrying out drink and drug drive enforcement, taking appropriate action against offenders, and patrolling our roads to keep people safe. Inspector John Lees, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“This weekend is typically very busy due to it being the last one before Christmas. My message to members of the public enjoying the festivities in pubs and clubs is think about your safety and the safety of those around you. Be responsible for your drinking, think ahead, and make prior arrangements to get home.
“There are simply no excuses for driving under the influence of drink or drugs. The consequences of doing so could last a lifetime so please don’t put your own life and the lives of others at risk by drink or drug driving.” Everyone can play a part in reducing the number of people who are risking their lives and the lives of others on our county’s roads.
