Ilkeston Market Place reopens as police seize van after fatal crash

Ilkeston Market Place has reopened as police hunt witnesses to a serious collision that killed a man in his 20s. Emergency services were called to the Market Place[1] at just before 2.10am on Saturday (December 16). It followed reports that a number of people had been struck by a van.

One man suffered serious injuries and died at the scene and two other people were treated for their injuries at hospital. One man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.[2] On Saturday night Derbyshire Police said he remains in custody and detectives are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident. Police said a van suspected as being involved in the incident was recovered from Stapleford on Saturday. Ilkeston Market Place has now reopened but police patrols are continuing in the area. Detective Chief Inspector Matt Croome, who is leading the investigation, said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this distressing time.

They have asked for privacy and are currently being supported by family liaison officers. “We have a team of officers working on this investigation and I would like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation while the Market Place in Ilkeston has been closed. I would continue to urge any witnesses to the collision, and anyone in the area at the time, to contact us.”
