Brave homeowner hit by own car as prolific Nottingham burglar Timothy Wilson flees in her stolen BMW

A brave householder from Derbyshire was struck by her own car as she valiantly tried to stop a prolific Nottingham burglar from driving off in her treasured BMW. Nottingham Crown Court[1] heard how the woman ran after Timothy Wilson after hearing her windows open early one morning and then spotting the 39-year-old in her garden with a stolen set of keys. After being hit to the arm attempting in vain to prevent the defendant from driving off, he then fled back to Nottingham[2] where, after speeding at 70mph in a 30mph limit he crashed the GBP8,000 motor, now on false plates, into the back of a bin lorry and went careering off into another car. Wilson, of Beechdale, then had to be freed from the car and was found with a bottle of vodka on him.

And two months on from it, he arrived from police[3] custody into the dock at Nottingham Crown Court on crutches due to the self-sustained injuries. Luc Chignell, mitigating, said: “He bears his own scars and is now walking with crutches and that’s probably his own fault. He is sorry for the injuries he caused the other driver.

“He is now using alcohol having previously been addicted to drugs and describes that as being worse than being on drugs.” Jailing Wilson, who has an astonishing 131 convictions to his name, for four years and seven months, Judge Nirmal Shant KC said: “What is plain and right is that this clearly involved a degree of planning and that is evidenced by how many times you have previously been convicted of burglary. “It is aggravated by your appalling record and the impact on your victims has plainly been profound.” Andy Peet, prosecuting, said Wilson, then of Woodfield Road, in the Aspley area, was previously jailed for five years and four months when he pleaded guilty to 10 counts of burglary, two counts of attempted burglary and two counts of theft.

On that occasion[4] the break-ins took place across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire including Lowdham and Melbourne. The prosecutor said at around 7.20am on November 23, 2023, a woman in Ripley heard the sound of her French windows open and then looked out to see the defendant in her garden. Mr Peet said: “Undoubtedly he had carried out a fruitful search of her kitchen and had taken the keys to her GBP8,000 BMW which was parked outside.

Having seen the defendant in the back garden she ran out to her vehicle and saw the defendant about to drive away in it. “She did what she did to prevent him getting away but she was hit by the car as the defendant sped away. Four hours later he was spotted driving the stolen BMW one on false plates down Nuthall Road.

“He was driving too fast and was trying to get past a bin lorry which turned into a side road and the defendant went into the back of it and spun into the path of another car being driven by an entirely innocent motorist.” Mr Peet said both vehicles suffered extensive damage and Wilson, now of Rodwell Close, was trapped inside the BMW. He said he was freed and taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre where, when asked to provide a sample of breath, he “bluntly told the officer to f*** off”.

The prosecutor said: “He then said ‘I was only going 70mph’. The speed limit on that stretch of road is 30mph.” Wilson pleaded guilty to burglary, theft, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

As well as the prison sentence, he was disqualified from driving for two years and seven months.
