Footage shows pursuit as disqualified driver hits 92 mph through Loughborough area

Footage shows officers from Leicestershire Police Roads Policing Unit calmly pursuing the van driver for more than 10 minutes on the morning of Thursday 14 December last year as he reaches high speeds, including in residential areas, drives through red lights, mounts a pavement and drives on the wrong side of bollards. After coming to a stop, where he then attempted to escape by running inside a business premises, the driver – 25-year-old Niall Thompson – was quickly detained by the officers and arrested. On Friday (12 January), at Leicester Crown Court, Thompson of Loughborough, was sentenced to 36 weeks imprisonment suspended for two years after previously pleading guilty to dangerous driving, two counts of driving while disqualified and two counts of driving without insurance.

He was also disqualified from driving for two years and ordered to take an extended re-test. He was also placed on a four-month curfew from 10pm until 6am.

Officers from the Roads Policing Unit had first become aware of the van on the A6 travelling in the direction of Birstall at around 10.35am.

Intelligence suggested the van was being driven by a disqualified driver. Officers followed the vehicle through Sileby. On exiting Sileby, the vehicle was then seen to increase its speed to 60mph in a 40mph zone.

At this stage, officers activated the blue lights on their vehicle but the van driver did not stop. A pursuit was authorised with the van maintaining speeds of around 70mph in a 40mph zone. The vehicle then entered the Barrow upon Soar area reaching speeds of 60mph in residential streets.

Back on the A6, the van was then seen to straddle between lanes and reached speeds of more than 90mph. The van then entered Loughborough town centre overtaking other road users and reaching speeds of 60mph. It was also seen to drive through red lights, mount a pavement, and contravene ‘keep left’ bollards before coming to a stop in Ashby Square.

Thompson left the vehicle and ran into a nearby business premises where he was arrested by officers. During enquiries, it was confirmed that Thompson was disqualified from driving. It was also evidenced by another police officer that Thompson had driven in Loughborough the day before – while disqualified and without insurance.

Police Constable James Yeoman, from the force’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “There is no doubt that Thompson put lives in danger, including his own, on that morning.

It is extremely lucky that no-one was hurt as a result of his actions. “Officers calmly pursued him through the streets before he came to a stop where he was immediately arrested. “Dangerous driving puts lives at risk and will not be tolerated.
