Neighbours ‘never seen anything like it’ after car went up in flames on Arnold street

Neighbours in Arnold were left stunned when they woke up in the middle of the night and saw a car well alight on their residential street. Photos had shown smoke billowing into the sky, while people on the street were left worrying the vehicle might have been theirs. Residents on Jermyn Drive said they’ve never seen ‘anything like it’ when the BMW burst into flames.

The fire was found to have been started deliberately from a naked flame. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, recalled the moment he was woken up by his wife after the fire started. He said: “My wife woke me up and I got scared at first because, right after I woke up, I immediately saw flames and thought my car was on fire.

It was all just orange out the window and then the emergency lights. Get the latest news straight to your phone by joining us on WhatsApp[1] “I’ve seen a car burning before but have never seen the aftermath – it’s a state now.

I’m glad everyone was OK.” Another resident, who also didn’t want to reveal her identity, said: “I’ve never seen anything quite like it before, we were pretty scared. It’s sad because this is such a quiet street.”

Another resident, who also didn’t want to be named, added: “My children were a bit scared from all the noises and the fire brigade came quite quickly from when the fire started.” A fourth said: “I was terrified because I was worried it was going to blow up.” Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service[2] and Nottinghamshire Police[3] were at the scene just before midnight on Thursday, January 4.

The fire was extinguished and officers left at around 1.30am. A spokesperson said: “We were called at 11.58pm to a vehicle fire on Jermyn Drive on January 4. Crews from Arnold Fire Station used a high-pressure hose reel, two breathing apparatus, a thermal imaging camera, and small tools to ensure the fire was extinguished.

“We left the scene around 1.30am on Friday, January 5, after offering safety advice to residents.” No injuries were reported by the emergency services.
