Nottinghamshire Police officer under investigation after Trevor Bartlett death removed from operational duties

A police officer who was put under investigation after a fatal crash has been removed from operational duties. On the evening of December 19, 2023, former Nottingham Post photographer Trevor Bartlett[1] was killed after being hit by a police[2] van on a pedestrian crossing near the Nurseryman pub in Beeston. The 80-year-old had been walking home, crossing on the A52 Derby Road, when he was struck by the van.

Nottinghamshire Police has now said the police officer driving the vehicle, who is under criminal investigation for dangerous driving and causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving[3], has been removed from operational duties. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which examines serious complaints and conduct matters involving the police, confirmed it was investigating the officer’s actions on Wednesday, January 10. It inspected the scene after the crash, gathering accounts from officers involved and obtaining CCTV, body-worn video and dash cam footage.

The officer who was driving has also been served with a notice of gross misconduct for potential breaches of police standards for professional behaviour.

The IOPC has explained that whilst a notice has been served, this does not mean criminal charges or a disciplinary proceeding will follow. The police van was involved in the collision whilst it was transporting a detainee to a custody facility. At the time of the incident, it had been travelling in a bus lane with blue lights and sirens activated.

The coroner was informed and a post-mortem examination took place on Friday, December 22.

Mr Bartlett began working at the Nottingham Evening Post as a 15-year-old copy boy, leaving school on a Friday and starting at the paper on the Monday.

He went on to become the youngest press photographer in the Midlands at the age of 17.
