Overturned lorry caused long delays on M1 northbound between junction 23 and 23A

Motorists faced delays this morning as the M1 northbound was closed due to an overturned lorry. Part of the busy motorway was shut[1] between junction 23 and 23A this morning (Friday, March 8).

The northbound carriageway was initially fully closed and drivers were informed of the closure by National Highways: East Midlands which has released a statement on social media. Posted on X, formerly Twitter, at 6.50am, it reads: “The M1 is CLOSED northbound between[2] J23 and J23A near Loughborough due to an overturned Heavy Goods Vehicle.

“National Highways Traffic Officers are on scene. More info to follow.” Junction 23A leads to East Midlands Airport in Castle Donington, while junction 23 is for Loughborough.

One lane later reopened at around 7.30am. The remaining two lanes were back open at around 9.30am this morning.
