Nine-vehicle crash on A1 near Newark after hailstorm caused drivers to “spin around and hit each other”
Nine vehicles were involved in a crash on a Nottinghamshire bypass after a hailstorm hit the area, police[1] have said. The A1 southbound is shut near Fernwood[2], just south of Newark, with more than a mile of congestion being reported.
The collision, first reported at 6.39pm on Wednesday, September 11, happened between Greenfield Close and the B6326. Nottinghamshire Police, who attended the collision, said the incident happened amid poor weather[3] conditions, which saw hailstones lash down on the main road.
A spokesperson for the force said the crash involved mostly cars and at least one van but confirmed no injuries had been reported. They said one of the drivers told 999 slippery conditions had caused drivers to “lose control” and “spin around and hit each other”.
Among the cars involved in the crash were a Renault, Vauxhall, Jaguar and Peugeot. The spokesperson said National Highways workers were currently clearing debris but it is unlikely the road will reopen before tomorrow.
National Highways said there was one-and-a-half miles of congestion and traffic is being diverted through Fernwood. “The A1 is closed southbound within the B6326 junction at New Balderton with traffic diverted through Fernwood,” it wrote on X.
“This is due to a 9 vehicle collision. Nottinghamshire Road Police are on scene dealing with incident. There is 1 1/2 miles of congestion on the approach to the junction.”
Traffic monitoring site Inrix reads: “A1 Southbound closed, stationary traffic due to accident, nine vehicles involved from Greenfield Close / Newark Road (Newark) to the B6326 (Fernwood).”
