The northbound side was also held for a short time as a helicopter from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance circled overhead. Drivers stuck in the traffic took videos of the air ambulance above the scene. The road closure caused a diversion which impacted bus services and caused more traffic elsewhere.

One driver, who asked not to be named, said at the time: “I have been stuck for almost four hours in-between Milton and Chilton. No sign of movement. Not sure what is happening or when we will get moving.

Feeling for everyone.” A statement from the air ambulance said: “Following treatment on scene, a patient was taken to hospital by road ambulance, with the air ambulance crew travelling with the patient to continue their care.” A statement from South Central Ambulance Service said: “We were contacted shortly after 1pm with the caller reporting a serious collision on the A34 southbound between Milton and Chilton involving a car and a lorry.

“We sent two ambulances, a paramedic team leader in a rapid response vehicle and the HIOWAA helicopter to the incident.

The driver of the car had suffered life-threatening injuries.

“Following treatment at the scene, the driver was then taken by road to the major trauma unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford[7], with the air ambulance team travelling with the patient in the ambulance.”
