Man in hospital with serious injuries after boulder dropped onto his van from bridge near Rainworth

A man has been seriously injured[1] after a boulder was dropped onto his car last night. The victim was driving a silver Transit van on the A617 in the direction of Mansfield[2] at around 10pm on Friday, November 29. It is believed that a boulder was dropped from the flyover bridge near Hemsley Road onto his vehicle, which went through the victim's windscreen.

The 26-year-old man sustained a serious head injury from the incident. The A617 remains closed[3] as of 11am on Saturday, November 30, over 12 hours after the incident took place between the roundabout at Kirklington Road and the roundabout with the A6191. It is understood that accident investigation work is still taking place at the scene.

Superintendent Heather Maelor said: "We are taking this mindless and abhorrent act extremely seriously. We know there were a high number of vehicles in the area at the time, so please review your dash cam footage to help our investigation and find the person responsible. "We are looking for footage from the scene of this incident or from any witnesses at around 10pm." Nottinghamshire Police[4] remains at the scene of the accident and is working to gather evidence.

The road is expected to reopen this afternoon.
