Tragedy as driver dies after A684 bridge crash in Bainbridge

Emergency services were called to the village of Bainbridge, in Wensleydale, on Friday (March 21) after a wagon crashed into a bridge on the A684. The incident, which took place at around 6am - saw the vehicle come to rest in the river below, and tragically, a 30-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. The bridge over the River Bairn remained closed following the incident, with motorists urged to avoid the area and use other routes at the time.

"Our thanks go to the members of the public who assisted at the scene of the collision. Our thoughts are with the driver's family", the force said. Police are now appealing to anyone who was driving along the A684 and saw a blue Volvo tipper HGV travelling from Masham, then along the A684 towards Bainbridge, or anyone who witnessed the collision, to get in touch.
