Locked Up: The criminals justice caught up with in March and what happened to them

Here are the faces of the 72 people who have been jailed for the most serious crimes in Wales in the past month. They included a man who beat and strangled his son's partner to death leaving her naked on the kitchen floor. There was also a man who killed his former work colleague in a fight about who could take a better punch and a "disgraced" vicar who sexually abused a young boy.

Once again there are a number of men who have attacked their partners or former partners. This devastating list includes one man who held his partner's head under bath water and a woman who was left "humiliated and embarrassed" by her partner's furious Gran Canaria holiday assault. Here are the criminals and their crimes.

Richard Jones

locked-up-the-criminals-justice-caught-up-with-in-march-and-what-happened-to-them

He murdered his son's girlfriend after wrongly believing she was trying to scam him and was jailed for at least 20 years[1]. Richard Jones, 50, left Sophie Evans, 30, naked on her kitchen floor after beating and strangling her to death in her home. Swansea Crown Court heard the mother-of-two was found dead on July 5 last year at a house in Llanelli[2], Carmarthenshire.

The court heard how on the day of the attack Ms Evans had returned home from dropping off her two children at school and was wearing just a towel - having showered - when Jones arrived. Jason Thomas

locked-up-the-criminals-justice-caught-up-with-in-march-and-what-happened-to-them

He killed a former work colleague in an argument about which of the pair could take a punch better. Jason Thomas was jailed for the manslaughter of Liam Morgan-Whittle after a night out in Llanelli.[3]

Police and paramedics attended a property in Robinson Street in the early hours of Sunday, March 25, 2023, where they found Mr Morgan-Whittle gravely ill. The 22-year-old was taken to hospital but could not be saved. Swansea Crown Court heard the pair had argued over who could withstand the most punches.

Despite a friend telling Thomas to "leave it" the 40-year-old killer said: "I'll hit you first" and the victim's last words were: "Go on then." Thomas then threw two ferocious punches causing Mr Morgan-Whittle fatal injuries. Anthony Pierce

The Church in Wales responded to the jailing of a former vicar and senior bishop[4] for sexually abusing a boy by saying he inflicted "appalling and lasting trauma" on his victim and had "disgraced the church". Anthony Pierce was a parish vicar in Swansea[5] in the 1980s when he subjected the young boy to a campaign of sexual abuse.

Pierce subsequently went on become one of the most senior clerics in Wales as the Bishop of Swansea and Brecon[6]. The church also confirmed that an independent investigation was under way into its handling of allegations made against Pierce by a different alleged victim. Those allegations were made in 1993 and known to a number of senior figures in the church but were not reported to police until 2010.

By the time the police were informed of those allegations the complainant had died and Pierce had been appointed to, and had retired from, the position of bishop. The church said it will publish the results of the review. Gavin Thomas and David Smith

The two men began fighting on a busy shopping street in Cardiff[7] city centre and one of them was armed with a battery inside a sock[8].

Both were caught on camera throwing punches at each other before the police turned up. Gavin Thomas, 48, and David Smith, 39, became involved in a fight in Queen Street at around 8.30pm on January 9. CCTV footage shown to a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court[9] depicted a group of people known to each other congregating near Marks & Spencer.

Nicholas McMurray

An 18-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by a train manager in Wales after he asked to check her ticket. The incident happened on a Great Western Railway (GWR) service from Cardiff to Swansea when Nicholas McMurray assaulted the teenager who had been travelling to Swansea to get picked up. McMurray assaulted the teenager, who is now a student, in June last year.

The incident started outside of Swansea when McMurray approached the woman in an isolated section of the train near the carriage doors and began inquiring about whether she'd bought a ticket. He then began touching her and moving her skirt to "gauge whether a sexual assault would be feasible", a sentencing hearing at Swansea Crown Court heard.[10] Billie Jo Kane

The court heard that though the land was fenced off the original padlock on the gate had been removed and replaced with a new one to which the men in the Hason truck had a key. The men in the lorry told the site manager they had permission from a named officer in Cardiff Council[26] to dump the waste but in fact no such person worked for the local authority.

Subsequent CCTV checks showed previous visits to the site by Hanson lorries. Dean Murray

Mold[88] Crown Court[89] heard Evans, 36, of Hampsons Grove, Wrexham[90], denied making indecent images of children but was convicted after a trial. He was jailed for 18 months for that offence and for one month more for failing to appear in court. Mohammad Comrie, Elijah Ogunnubi-Sime, and Faiz Shah

The religiously-motivated gang tricked a London-based music producer into travelling to west Wales where they beat and kidnapped him.[91] The bruised and bleeding victim was left handcuffed to a radiator in a property which the kidnappers had rented for a week.

Swansea Crown Court[92] heard the motivation for the extraordinary plot was twofold - one was to extort money from Itay Kashti and the other was because of the musician's Jewish faith. Sending the trio to prison a judge said anyone hearing the details of the what the gang did and their motivation for doing it would be "horrified." Samuel Roberts

The thug beat his partner and then told her to lie[93] to the police about how she came about her injuries.

The sneaky thief stole wallets and mobile phones from people after approaching them in the street and engaging them in conversation.

After lifting their personal items Bardich then tried to use the stolen cards in nearby shops as well as to withdraw cash. Cardiff Crown Court[103] heard that the Probation Service had initially recommended a community-based sentence for the defendant but had rescinded that suggestion after being informed that the Home Office plans to the deport the Moroccan national. Sending Bardich to prison[104] a judge said given the importance of phones and bank cards the defendant's actions would have caused significant hassle, worry, and concern for the victims. Ronald Richards

He was jailed after he "orchestrated a campaign of rape" spanning three decades by raping two young girls more than 110 times.

Ronald Richards, now aged 66, only saw his crimes come to light when one of the victims broke down in tears several years ago.[105] The harrowing details of Richards' behaviour were read out at Swansea Crown Court. He left children screaming in horror by pointing a gun in the middle of a Welsh street. Armed police were called[108] after Mark Griffiths aimed the firearm at people in Caernarfon on September 15 last year. Part of the incident was captured on CCTV and the defendant was arrested.

A judge at Mold Crown Court said she was "sad" that such behaviour could happen in her hometown. Mark Swann

He glassed a pub bouncer[109] in the face before walking away from the scene. He picked up a glass and smashed it onto the head of his victim at the Front Room bar in Rhyl.

CCTV footage then showed Mark Swann, 54, leaving the scene but he was arrested 13 days later. A sentencing at Mold Crown Court heard the pub bouncer had been told a female customer was barred and had gone over to her to ask her to leave but she said she wanted to finish her drink. Swann then approached the pair, picked up the glass, and shattered it in on the doorman's face and head.

Shaun Clawson

He was arrested by police on suspicion of drug offences was caught trying to hide almost 50g of cocaine under the back seat of the police car that was taking him to a police station. Shaun Clawson, 39, had been travelling as a passenger in a Seat Leon on February 1 when officers stopped the car on the A40 near St Clears in Carmarthenshire[110]. Carl Lintern

The paedophile fairground worker who worked at Barry Island Pleasure Park groomed children as young as 11 years old[111] while he was working.

He would blackmail his victims into sending intimate images of themselves before threatening to share them online. Carl Lintern, 42, came to the attention of police in 2023 after the parents of one of his victims confronted him at the pleasure park but he appeared "unbothered" about their allegations. A photograph was taken of him and was passed on to the police.

Dean Lewis

The shoplifter armed with an axe-handled walking stick[112] made a threat to kill a shop manager after he made a quip about him "needing to pay for his items". He later claimed he had been "spiked" the day before and had little memory of the altercation. Dean Lewis, 48, burgled a shed at a property in Sully, Vale of Glamorgan, at 8.20am on January 15 and took a bike and a power washer both worth hundreds of pounds.

The theft was reported to police and the defendant was identified on Ring doorbell footage. Jason Youde

The violent abuser left his partner triggered by sudden movements and loud noises after he physically beat her and held her head under bath water.[113] The victim said she felt her true self was "caged" during the relationship, which left her with an "overwhelming sense of emptiness". Youde, 37, of Trealaw, Tonypandy[114], subjected his partner to years of abusive behaviour between November 2022 and August last year.

The relationship was described as "loving and happy" at first but the defendant changed, began drinking alcohol to excess, became jealous and possessive, and used violence against her frequently. Kyle Rudge and Chris Lord

Drug dealers were found to be involved in the supply of cannabis after videos and images of the drug and bundles of cash were found on their phones. One of them was also involved in the supply of cocaine with messages on his phone referring to "snow" and "wedding cake".

Kyle Rudge, 34, and Chris Lord, 31, were identified following the arrest of another drug dealer[115] whose phone was examined by police. Contacts on his phone referred to KR, a number later attributed to Rudge, and Lordy, a number attributed to Chris Lord. Keiron Bellis

He threw a punch in a town centre row was tracked on CCTV[116] and arrested.

A woman was being restrained by a security guard and Keiron Bellis threatened to kill the guard and punched out, sending the guard and the woman to the ground. The defendant fled but camera operators watched him go to a hotel and police arrested him there soon afterwards. Keiron Bellis, 31, of Maes y Craig, Bodfari, near Denbigh[117], was jailed at Mold[118] Crown Court[119] for two months for using threatening or abusive words or behaviour.

Ben James

The thug punched his then-partner over and over until blood started pouring from her nose[120] and she vomited. Ben James, 35, who has a history of beating women, laid into his then-partner at an address in Swansea[121] in May 2022 after he'd drunk alcohol, Swansea Crown Court heard. The woman, who was concerned about the blood streaming from her nose after the assault, begged James to take her to hospital.

He took her to A&E at Morriston Hospital in Swansea on the condition that she would make up a lie that she'd fallen over and had hit her head. John Peebles

A woman was left "humiliated and embarrassed" by her partner's furious Gran Canaria holiday assault which left her with visible bruises and soreness and unable to enjoy her holiday. The victim gave a powerful victim impact statement as 35-year-old John Peebles was sentenced for a string of attacks on her.[122]

She described how she could see the anger in Peebles' eyes during the holiday assault after he had been drinking. She said she had been left struggling to sleep, unable to eat properly, and left with nightmares in which she is in a room with him unable to move or scream for help.
