Pictures from the scene showed the lorries badly damaged with one having spilled its load across the northbound carriageway. It sparked a major clean-up operation which shut the road for about 11 hours. No one was believed to have been seriously injured, police said previously.
Armitage, whose address is listed in court papers as Valley Crescent in the village of Wrenthorpe, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, has been charged with driving without due care and attention following the crash, it was confirmed on Wednesday (July 16).
The 40-year-old will appear before magistrates in Teesside.
