Hume Highway crash: Two Women dead after being struck by a car while helping injured animal

Two young women have been hit and killed by a car after they stopped to help an injured animal on a busy Melbourne[2] motorway.
Emergency services received reports that two women had been struck by a car on the M31 Hume Freeway just after 7.30pm on Thursday.
Officers rushed to the scene in Craigieburn, in Melbourne's north.
A 30-year-old Beveridge woman died at the scene while a 30-year-old Thomastown woman was airlifted to hospital but died a short time later.
The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene to assist police.
The exact circumstances of the collision are being investigated.
'It is believed the pair had stopped to assist an injured animal before they were struck,' Victoria Police said in a statement.

The speed limit is 100km/hour on the Hume Highway, an 840km route that connects Melbourne and Sydney.
