A man has died after he was struck by two cars on the A19[1] in a 'tragic incident' days before Christmas. Emergency services were called to the A19 southbound following a report of a collision below the overpass of the A1893.

It has been reported that, for reasons yet to be established, a pedestrian was walking along the southbound carriageway when he was struck by a white Toyota Prius and a blue Volkswagen Sharan. Northumbria Police has confirmed that, sadly the man, aged in his 60s, died at the scene.

The force has said his next of kin have been informed and continue to be supported.

Forensic officers are at the scene of the crash and the A19 remains closed in both directions on Sunday, December 21.

Photographs from the scene show a blue forensic tent[2] has been erected on the carriageway as officers appear to scour the road. The driver of the vehicles remained at the scene to assist with enquiries and an investigation is now under way, the force has said.

Officers from Northumbria Police's Roads Policing Unit are now appealing for witnesses to come forward. They are especially keen to hear from anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident itself, or the moments leading up to the collision.

Sergeant Steve Chappell, of Northumbria Police, said: "This is a tragic incident in which a man has sadly lost his life, and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

We will continue to support them in any way we can.

"Our investigation will look to establish the circumstances around the collision, and we are appealing for anyone else who was in the area at the time and saw what happened to come forward. Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could prove valuable to our enquiries".

A North East Ambulance spokesperson said: "We received multiple calls to 999 from 10.11pm onwards on 20 December to reports of an incident involving two vehicles and a pedestrian at the junction of the A19 and A183 in Sunderland. We sent two emergency ambulance crews, a doctor and a clinical team leader.

Police also attended the scene".

Anyone who has information or footage is being asked to get in touch by sending Northumbria Police a direct message on social media, or by using live chat and report forms on the website here.[3]

Those unable to make contact in these ways can call 101, quoting the following reference number: NP 20251220-1150.

Road closures

The A19 northbound between the junctions for the A690 and the A183, and the southbound carriageway between the junctions for the A1231 and the A690, remain closed as officers conduct enquiries.

Pedestrian access along the westbound stretch of the roundabout is also closed. It is expected the closures will remain in place for some time, and motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
