During a Nottingham City Council[2] meeting to discuss the performance of the tram on December 12, Mr Stocker said: “Over the year we have seen an increase in people looking to harm themselves around the tram network.
“This isn’t something that is localised to Nottingham.

“It has unfortunately been a sad trend post-Covid that people who are vulnerable are feeling drawn to.”
According to mental health charity Mind, around a third of adults and young people surveyed said their mental health has got much worse since March 2020, when the country was first placed into lockdown.
A further 88 per cent of young people said loneliness made their mental health worse during the pandemic.

Similarly the World Health Organisation[4] said last year the pandemic triggered a 25 per cent increase in the prevalence of anxiety and depression worldwide.
In response Mr Stocker said they were looking at where incidents of attempted harm were happening, and NET will be working with Nottinghamshire Police to determine how to prevent them.

Nicholas Smith preyed upon the girl and raped her up to six times over a five-month period – warning her not to tell anyone or they would both go to prison.
Detectives began an investigation when the girl revealed what had happened to friends, and teachers at her school became aware.
As well as raping and sexually assaulting the girl, Smith also forced her to watch sexual acts and send him indecent images of herself between January and June 2022.

The 44-year-old, of Oakenhall Avenue, was jailed for a total of 15 years at Nottingham Crown Court[2] on December 8.
He will serve a further five years on licence after his release from prison.
Smith is also now subject to a restraining order which bans him from contacting the girl for life and has been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.

Smith had earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of raping a girl under the age of 13, sexual assault of a child, causing a child to look at sexual activity and two counts of making an indecent image of a child.
Detective Constable Stuart Dolby, of Nottinghamshire Police[4], said: “Smith is a predatory sex offender who committed some truly appalling offences against this young girl.
“I know this has been a very difficult and upsetting process for the victim and her family, so I am full of admiration for the bravery and dignity she has shown throughout the legal process.
“But for her bravery in speaking to officers, this man would have remained at-large and other children could have been put at risk as a result.
“The evidence she gave was extremely detailed and utterly damning for Smith, who really had no choice but to admit to what he had done.
“I am pleased he has now been handed a very significant prison sentence and hope this case serves as a warning to others about the consequences of abusing children in this way.
“We will find out, we will arrest you and we will do whatever we can to bring you to justice.”

A drug dealer who shot himself in the leg and pretended he had fallen off his bike in a bid to evade justice, has been jailed.

Former Notts County[2] footballer Romello Nangle called for an ambulance claiming he had been involved in a road accident and had a ‘big hole in my leg’ at around 3.40pm on 21 May 2022.
He cancelled the ambulance a short time later saying he had got a lift to hospital.
Police later received a call from a nurse at the Queen’s Medical Centre[3] saying a man had presented at A&E with shotgun pellets in his leg.

Nangle’s story began to unravel when he claimed he had caught his leg on the exhaust pipe of a motorbike when falling off his bicycle.
He then changed his story again to say he heard a loud bang before coming off the bike.
Detectives were able to unpick his claims and disprove them using CCTV footage and telecommunications data when they analysed his mobile phone.
They were also able to prove his mother, Melanie Nangle, and accomplice, Harveer Narwal, had also conspired to cover up what had happened.
Nangle, aged 28, of Hucknall Road, Nottingham, was jailed for a total of four-and-a-half years when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on November 22.
He had earlier pleaded guilty to possession of a loaded shotgun in a public place, conspiring to pervert the course of justice and supplying a class B drug.

Narwal, aged 29, of Plains Farm Close, Nottingham, was jailed for 13 months after earlier admitting perverting the course of justice.
Melanie Nangle, aged 53, of Bilberry Walk, Nottingham, was given a nine-month sentence suspended for 18 months after pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice.
When detectives seized Nangle’s phone they discovered a series of Whatsapp messages in which Nangle admitted he had shot himself accidentally, along with messages form Melanie Nangle and Narwal urging him to delete any evidence relating to the discharge.
Officers also extracted deleted messages showing Melanie Nangle had been speaking to her son about how to dispose of the firearm.
Doorbell camera and CCTV footage captured Nangle on the day of the incident with a tube concealed in his trousers and a clear hole in his trouser leg when he later returned home.
Further footage showed he had changed clothes before leaving the address again to attend hospital.
Further messages on Nangle’s mobile phone showed he had been involved in supplying the class B drug over a period between December 2021 and May last year.
Detective Inspector Daniel Johnstone, of Nottinghamshire Police[5], said: “Detectives had to spend many painstaking hours reviewing CCTV footage and unscrambling WhatsApp messages which revealed exactly what had happened.
“Nangle armed himself before leaving home and then revealed in messages he had forgotten the shotgun was loaded and had shot himself in the leg.
“Officers were also able to prove his mother and Harveer Narwal were involved in the conspiracy to evade justice and cover up what had happened.
“We will utilise every available resource when seeking to bring firearms offenders to justice and this case again demonstrates that.”
